Elna McIntosh, the loss of a giant

Elna McIntosh, the loss of a giant

This week my industry lost a giant. Dr. Elna McIntosh was one of South Africa’s most prominent and respected clinical sexologists, sexual health activists, and media personalities. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she played a foundational role in de-stigmatizing sexual health and improving clinical access to sexual medicine across the country.

When I got into the sexual health industry with Lola Montez she guided me and gave me my first television and radio interviews. At that time she was a host with Mark Pilgrim on a TV series – Sex etc.

For years she was a guest speaker at our Lola Montez Ladies Night and a speaker at Sexpo. Elna could always be counted on for a laugh when it felt as if the whole world was against what we were trying to achieve.

  1. Professional Background & Career Focus

Prof. McIntosh is best known as the founder and director of the Disa Clinic (Disa Health Care), a specialized sexual and reproductive health centre based in Johannesburg.

  • Clinical Specialization: Her practice focuses heavily on sexual dysfunctions, relationship engineering, erectile dysfunction, low libido, pain during intercourse, and reproductive health management. It was from her that I first learnt about Vaginismus and how to treat it.
  • Inclusivity Advocacy: She was an outspoken ally and clinical provider for LGBTQIA+ communities, sex workers, and vulnerable youth, ensuring non-judgmental healthcare access.
  • HIV/AIDS Activism: During the height of the HIV pandemic in South Africa, she worked tirelessly on educational programs and clinical interventions to curb transmission rates and reduce the stigma surrounding the virus.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness: Sadly, it is this disease that she had fought for years that had the final say. I know that her work with Pink Drive was dear to her and I have no doubt that her contribution will be missed.
  1. Educational Profile & Credentials

Elna backed her public advocacy with extensive clinical and academic training:

  • Doctorate Degree: She held a PhD in Clinical Sexology from Maimonides University in the United States.
  • Medical Training: She started her journey as a registered nurse, specializing in midwifery and community health before pivoting entirely into advanced sexual medicine.
  • Affiliations: Affiliated with major national and international bodies, including the Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) and the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS).
  1. Media Presence & Public Influence

Affectionately known to many South Africans simply as “Dr. Elna.” She realized early on that clinical work alone could not break cultural taboos. She took sexual health education and educators like me, directly into the public sphere:

  • Radio & Television. For years, she hosted high-profile sexual health talk shows. Major South African radio stations (such as 702 and Jacaranda FM).  Made regular expert appearances on television networks.
  • Print Journalism. She contributed regular advice columns to national magazines and newspapers. Answering highly sensitive sexual health questions with a signature blend of clinical authority and warm, accessible wit.
  • Author. She authored several widely read books in South Africa targeted at breaking down sexual taboos. Answering everyday questions about intimacy, and teaching sex education to parents and teenagers.
  • Dusi Canoe Marathon. I’m not sure how many she completed. I know it was more than one. Even after she stopped competing she encouraged and supported rowers from disadvantaged communities.
  1. Legacy and Impact

Dr. Elna McIntosh’s legacy in South Africa defined by her “radical realism” toward human intimacy.

She successfully shifted the public perception.  Sexology is no longer a taboo topic. It is an essential branch of physical and psychological healthcare. Through her clinic, books, and media work, she has helped thousands of South Africans. They now engineer healthier relationships and safer intimate lives.

I am forever grateful for her open-door policy and generosity. I am sure that everyone in this industry will miss her wisdom, candour and wit. Rest in Peace Elna, I miss you already.
