Watching porn and being entertained by topless girls dancing and prancing on stage was second nature for Sun City guests.
But all that seems to have changed.
Sharon Gordon, owner of sensuality store Lola Montez, was surprised on Thursday when she was told that her exhibit of sex toys, massage oils, sexy lingerie and edible lubricants was offensive and tarnished the hotel's image.
Gordon was at the hotel at the invitation of the Association of Office Professionals of SA, holding their conference there. They had asked her to bring and exhibit her merchandise. The items on display elicited a few giggles from the women, who might have seen some of them for the first time. Others dug into their pockets and bought a few items.
But the hotel management didn't find the exhibit amusing, and removed Gordon from the conference room.
While other exhibitors enjoyed maximum exposure for their businesses last week, Gordon was given a room where "people had to view those items in a private area". As a result, she lost sales.
Gordon, a former lawyer who owns three Lola Montez stores in greater Joburg, on Monday said she believed there was nothing shameful about what she does and that she had spent a lot of time legitimising the brand and making it comfortable for potential clients.
"They think I am filthy - a dirty little secret that should be hidden away. We were the busiest table when we were there in the open, and no one was ashamed.
"In the olden days we went to Sun City to watch porn and their Sun girls dance topless, but when I display sex toys I am told I am tarnishing the hotel's image." Gordon said she was careful of what she took to the conference. There was no porn and no risqué stuff because it was not their market.
"Our market is soft and gentle. We did not want to offend people with penis-looking vibrators. I took some small vibrators that don't look like vibrators," she said.
While she claims that the exhibition was only at the conference centre and children would not have been able to access it, the hotel management differed. Boris Borman, the director of operations, admitted that no one had complained about the display. He said Gordon had set up her display in an open area where children could have seen it. Also, the vibrators were offensive.
"We can't have that," he said, adding that the display was in full view of everyone and close to the Valley of Waves. So they had given Gordon a private room for her exhibition. |

HOW TO USE A VIBRATOR
